You could, but we would certainly not recommend it. The window air conditioner will cool the air, but not remove any of the moisture. Even with running an air conditioner, you could have relative humidity levels approaching 90%! Using this method without a dehumidifier will provide you with a cool and damp basement.

Do you recommend having both a dehumidifier and an air conditioner?

Hi there,

Basements are generally cool and while the dehumidifier does add a little bit of heat, but depending on the size of your basement the heat should not raise the temperature more than a couple degrees. Also, when you first set the unit up, it may run a lot the first few days, but once it has sufficiently dried out the basement and pulled the moisture from the wood and concrete, the unit should be able to maintain an ideal humidity without having to run very frequently. Considering the unit only generates heat when it is running, this should not have a noticeable impact on the ambient temperature in the basement. This may not be the case for all dehumidifiers, as cheap appliance grade units have to run a lot longer and work harder to remove the humidity, and that would cause them to add much more heat to the room, but with our units and our incredible energy efficiency, our units will run on the average of 25% of the time that appliance grade units will run. For example, if the humidity rises 5%, another unit may need to run for an hour and our unit would only need to run for 15 minutes to reduce the humidity down to the desired level. Feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like to discuss this in more detail.

Thanks Rod. That is exactly what I am experiencing with an appliance grade unit. It raises the room temp by 10 degrees on some days. It cycles on/off all the time. I think I am going to give your dehumidifier a shot. I need to work out the drain situation though. I am probably going to need a condensate pump to direct the water to the standpipe drain for my washing machine. Otherwise, I would have to run a line outside. Hopefully the pump can run on the same electrical circuit as the dehumidifier. The dehumidifier has it's own dedicated outlet/circuit.

I have my unit on a 15amp circuit along w/ another sump pump--I actually have 2 sump pumps, and this one is the one that RARELY ever goes off, so essentially my unit has it's own 15amp circuit.

I think you will be pleased w/ the unit. It has certainly improved my basement tremendously in less than 12hrs. I have to agree w/ Rod, my unit runs maybe 10-15min every hour, and is off the rest of the time. The machine isn't off because it is in a de-icing mode...it just doesn't need to be on.
