Humidex

Humidex Basement FanAlthough Humidex markets this device as a way to remove humidity, it does not affect the humidity of air in your home.  There are no components in the Humidex that are designed to remove moisture from the air.  It consists of a fan and a humidistat. Installation involves cutting a hole in the floor above your basement.

In order for the Humidex to dehumidify your basement, it relies on warm and dry weather conditions. Keep reading to find out how the Humidex is supposed to work. Success of the Humidex relies on the assumption that air in the upper level of your home is already perfectly warm and dry due to sunshine and dry weather conditions. The Humidex exhausts air from the basement outside and sucks air from the above level down into your basement... and in turn pulls outdoor air into the house. (This actually works against the natural upward direction of airflow in all houses.)

The Humidex assumes the air on the above level is warm and dry enough to substantially affect the basement temperature and humidity. The assumed "warm and dry" air that entered the basement from above levels will cool and collect moisture as it comes in contact with cool moist basement air, cold walls and cold floors.  In theory, this air will than be pushed out of the house where it can become warm and dry again from sunshine and dry outside air.

Features of the Humidex include:
  • Aluminum cabinet for no corrosion
  • Dehumidistat control which automatically regulates the unit
  • Varialbe 1 phase speed fan with a control

Disadvantages of the Humidex:

The Humidex is a passive solution.  The Humidex will NOT help your basement humidity problems if:

  • weather is cool
  • weather is damp
  • your home is located near a coast, stream or body of water
  • outside relative humidity is above 50%
  • there are signs of humidity problems on your first floor
    • foggy windows
    • warped wood floors
    • signs of leaks
    • damp walls
    • mold growth

Unlike the Humidex, a dehumidifier is more reliable because it actively removes moisture from the basement air, regardless of weather conditions or outside factors.  By working with (not against) natural upward airflow patterns called the stack effect, a basement dehumidifier will help solve humidity problems throughout the house.
